Ackenkirch is a municipal situated at the northern lakeside of Lake Achensee. Its territory extends from Lake Achensee to the Bavarian border and embraces more localities such as Achenkirch, Achensee, Achental and Achenwald, Skolastika and the terrain of the former Achenseehof farm.
Back in 1313 AD this village was known as “Achental”, but in 1971 the name was changed to Achenkirch.
In the late nineteenth century famous personalities, such as the authors Peter Rosegger and Ludwig Ganghofer, used to choose this destination for their summer vacations. This city is also the born place of a famous Austrian actor and playwright, Felix Mitterer.
The village and its surroundings, beside the beauty of the nature, became richer with several places of cultural interest, like the 15 chapels dating back to the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Enchanting building is the Parish Church and its protuberant spire, built in 1748 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It’s impossible not to notice the wine tavern that traces back to the 15th century, but succeed to maintain its original form up to present day. Today, after a recent renovation, this place is still serving as a tavern.
The Lake Achensee (that in fact is the largest lake of Tyrol) and its breath-taking landscape with the mountains surroundings, gives to Ackenkirch the possibility to attract large number of people. Shipping, great sports offers and numerous beaches are part of the possibilities that you can experience during the summer season. Great panoramic view on the lake will greet you if you choose to go hiking along the 450 km of well-manicured trails.
Not only summer, but also winter time in Ackenkirch is always interesting, due to the Hochalm-Christlum skiing area with its 25 km of ski slopes and 4 lift facilities. For all those who like skiing Achenkirch offers 58 km of cross-country ski trails, and for the romantics, an exciting activity is making a horse-drawn sleigh ride wrapped up in a cosy, warm blanket.
