Travel to Raja Ampat West Papua in Indonesia

Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia's West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau. Raja Ampat Regency is a new regency which separated from Sorong Regency in 2004. It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua (province) of Indonesia which was formerly Irian Jaya. The islands are the most northern pieces of land in the Australian continent.

The name of Raja Ampat comes from local mythology that tells about a woman who finds seven eggs. Four of the seven eggs hatch and become kings that occupy four of Raja Ampat biggest islands whilst the other three become a ghost, a woman, and a stone. History shows that Raja Ampat was once a part of Tidore Kingdom, an influential kingdom from Maluku. Yet, after Holland invaded Maluku, it was shortly claimed as a part of the kingdom of Holland. The main occupation for people around this area is fishing since the area is dominated by the sea. They live in a small colony of tribes that spreads around the area. Although traditional culture still strongly exists, they are very welcoming to visitors. Their religion is dominantly Christian.

Adventure Travel body reinforces values

Passengers from Delfin II explore the Amazon (expeditions.com)

Adventure Travel Trade Association Recognizes Values Statement Commitment as "Cost of Entry" to Adventure Tourism Industry Sector

Setting precedent for the global adventure tourism sector, the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) today has released a Values Statement — a new prerequisite of membership in the near 900-member global community representing more than 80 nations — to ensure members of its community put effort towards nurturing, protecting and professionalizing sustainable development of the adventure travel industry.

As a trade association made up of travel organizations including tour operators, destinations, travel agents, accommodations and more, committing to these values motivates members to move their businesses towards performing responsibly and considering the whole of their actions in the global community.

“Our newly established shared values were several years in the making and were formed through a collaborative process between the ATTA team, advisory board, our members and input from our partners at the UNWTO,” said ATTA President Mr. Shannon Stowell. “As adventure tourism faces steep growth in the coming years, it is critical that we establish, commit to and act upon what we believe are the key values of our organization and our members as a whole. How we conduct ourselves will set the highest standards of responsibility, of care-taking of the people and places upon which our industry depends.”

With this announcement, ATTA members must now agree to the Values Statement prior to membership confirmation or renewal. After last week’s private announcement, more than 100 members voluntarily signed the Values. In signing, ATTA members state that they too will strive and move toward these values (in brief):

1) Tourism Ethics - The ATTA affirms and agrees with the UNWTO’s Global Code of Ethics for Tourism

2) Protection of Children - The ATTA believes in the protection of children from harmful effects of tourism and is a signatory of TheCode.org

3) Responsibility - The ATTA believes in the universal standards put forth by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), and that tourism businesses and destinations should adopt the criteria specifically in these four areas:

-Demonstrating effective sustainable management
-Maximizing social and economic benefits to the local community and minimizing negative impacts
-Maximizing benefits to cultural heritage and minimizing negative impacts
-Maximizing benefits to the environment and minimizing negative impacts

4) Community Principles established by the ATTA and its active Members — when working under the auspices as aforementioned — “...will treat each other and travelers with respect and professionalism and conduct business with safety, honesty and integrity. As a community, we will seek to improve our own organization’s compliance with the points noted above. As a community, we will wherever possible seek to assist other organizations and professionals within the association to achieve success, both in the pursuit of the values noted above and in business.”

When reviewing the Values, Secretary-General of the UNWTO Mr. Taleb Rifai said, “UNWTO welcomes the ATTA Values Statement and encourages all ATTA members to promote and implement these principles in their activities as a means to build a more responsible tourism sector. UNWTO is particularly pleased to see that ATTA has incorporated the principles of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism approved by the UN General Assembly in 2001 in its Values Statement and commends ATTA’s vision for the future of tourism.”

The ATTA has translated these Values into Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese with German and French versions impending. Once members sign the Values they are encouraged to share these Values that they hold as part of the ATTA community with their travelers and clients.

Travel Purchases Influenced by Frequent Flyer Miles

Frequent Flyer MilesIn most cases travelers tend to give some thought and consideration to earning frequent flyer miles whenever making decisions about travel purchases.

At least that is true according to a survey that was recently conducted by GO Airport Express and The GO Group, one a ground transportation company out of Chicago and the other an international franchise organization of ground transportation companies.

The survey had a total of 675 participants, all of which were asked how often earning frequent flyer miles factored into their decisions. Nearly 71% indicated that earning frequent flyer miles always, frequently or occasionally factored into their decision with only 28% saying that it never does.

According to President of GO Airport Express John McCarthy, "I think the survey tells us that people are seeking an added value when making airfare, hotel or other related purchases, as opposed to choosing on single factors such as price."

In addition to that, customers of GO Airport Express can also earn Preferred Rider miles as well as United Mileage Plus or American Advantage miles by joining the free Preferred Rider Program.

I am not a frequent flyer though I do know that if I was, I would definitely be looking into decisions that increased my frequent flyer miles. With the downward spiral our economy is on, coupled with the rising fuel costs and rising prices of airline tickets, frequent travelers can use all the help they can get.

United Kingdom Most Popular Travel Destination in 2011

United Kingdom2011 is over and 2012 has begun! The old year went out with a bang, the same way the new year started, but just because 2011 is over doesn't mean that it is forgotten. Citizens of Planet Earth did a lot of traveling last year to places all over the world but only one place could top the list as the most popular travel destination of 2011. While you may think that places like the Caribbean, the Bahamas or some other tropical place would be the most popular, it seems most travelers disagree because the most popular travel destination of 2011 was Britain, according to a study done by Expedia.

Travel to Britain saw a 10% increase in 2011 over 2010 and it appears as if the trend of domestic breaks is poised to continue strong in 2012 as well. Lots of new things to do in the region, like local culinary tours and cooking classes, as well as the increase in local bicycle shops, like Boris Bikes in London, are encouraging people to explore the country in new and exciting ways.

Andy Washington, Managing Director of Expedia UK and Ireland, stated, "It has been an eventful year for the travel industry and a tough year for certain popular travel destinations, but we've noticed time and time again that people tend to forego their annual holiday. It's encouraging to see that Brits are taking advantage of the multitude of attractions closer to home in the UK and embracing 'staycations'. 2011 has highlighted the mixed approach to holidaying taken by Brits in troubled times."

Washington also added, "As some are drawn to holidaying at home, others simply look for alternative destinations - with Spain and Turkey particularly growing in popularity during the Arab Spring. The other notable trend was deal hunting - with savvy travelers taking advantage of the great deals to be had in destinations like Egypt and Japan as these destinations recover. Yet what's absolutely clear is our determination to keep our holidays."

Expedia's study listed the top 10 traveling destinations for 2011 as:

  1. Southern UK regions

  2. London

  3. New York

  4. Paris

  5. Las Vegas

  6. Rome

  7. Amsterdam

  8. Barcelona

  9. Regional Northern France

  10. Edinburgh

Trends are supposed to continue strong into 2012, maybe because a vast majority of the population believes that the world is going to "end" this year. It seems that all these doomsdayers are trying to accomplish what they can before the Mayan calendar wipes us all out.

Ackenkirch is a municipal situated at the northern lakeside of Lake Achensee. Its territory extends from Lake Achensee to the Bavarian border and embraces more localities such as Achenkirch, Achensee, Achental and Achenwald, Skolastika and the terrain of the former Achenseehof farm.

Back in 1313 AD this village was known as “Achental”, but in 1971 the name was changed to Achenkirch.

In the late nineteenth century famous personalities, such as the authors Peter Rosegger and Ludwig Ganghofer, used to choose this destination for their summer vacations. This city is also the born place of a famous Austrian actor and playwright, Felix Mitterer.

The village and its surroundings, beside the beauty of the nature, became richer with several places of cultural interest, like the 15 chapels dating back to the 18th, 19th and 20th century. Enchanting building is the Parish Church and its protuberant spire, built in 1748 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It’s impossible not to notice the wine tavern that traces back to the 15th century, but succeed to maintain its original form up to present day. Today, after a recent renovation, this place is still serving as a tavern.

The Lake Achensee (that in fact is the largest lake of Tyrol) and its breath-taking landscape with the mountains surroundings, gives to Ackenkirch the possibility to attract large number of people. Shipping, great sports offers and numerous beaches are part of the possibilities that you can experience during the summer season. Great panoramic view on the lake will greet you if you choose to go hiking along the 450 km of well-manicured trails.

Not only summer, but also winter time in Ackenkirch is always interesting, due to the Hochalm-Christlum skiing area with its 25 km of ski slopes and 4 lift facilities. For all those who like skiing Achenkirch offers 58 km of cross-country ski trails, and for the romantics, an exciting activity is making a horse-drawn sleigh ride wrapped up in a cosy, warm blanket.
