Cairo

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and has an official population of nearly 15.5 million people (17.6 in 2010) , making it the largest city in Africa and the Middle East and the eighth largest megacity in the world by counting the total population of the urban area. Although Al-Qahira is the official name, it is called more frequently in Egyptian Arabic Misr, the Arabic name of Egypt.





It is situated on the banks of the Nile and a few adjacent islands, north of Egypt. To the west lies the city of Giza and the ancient necropolis of Memphis on the Giza plateau, with its three large pyramids including the Great Pyramid of Cheops. To the south lies the site of ancient Egyptian city of Memphis.
The inhabitants of Cairo are called Cairotes.








Cairo is the most visited site in Egypt, due to its reception facilities,urban heritage and its proximity to the Great Pyramids of Giza. Its universities, including the al-Azhar University located in the eponymous mosque, are very famous and historical heritage ,are preserved by prestigious institutions - Egyptian Museum,founded in 1857 by French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, Museum of Islamic Art or Coptic Art Museum.






Since 1992, more than a hundred monuments restored, the capital of Egypt found a long neglected heritage: the Fatimid period (tenth -twelfth century), the stronghold of Saladin (twelfth - thirteenth century), mosques and palace Mamluk (thirteenth - sixteenth century) or the Ottoman caravanserai (sixteenth - nineteenthcentury).






The city also organizes the annual international film festival in Cairo.
